Diana Winston

Meditation Teacher · mindfulness teacher · author and speaker

Diana Winston is the director of UCLA Mindful, the mindfulness education center of UCLA Health, and the author of The Little Book of Being: Practices and Guidance for Uncovering Your Natural Awareness. She has taught mindfulness since 1993 in hospitals, universities, corporations, nonprofits and schools in the US and Asia, and has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 1989, including a year as a Buddhist nun in Burma. The Los Angeles Times called her "one of the nation's best-known teachers of mindfulness."

During her 17 years at UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center, she developed the evidence-based Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPS) curriculum and the Training in Mindfulness Facilitation program, which trained more than 500 mindfulness teachers worldwide. She is a founding board member of the International Mindfulness Teachers Association and a member of the Teacher's Council at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, where she was trained to teach by Jack Kornfield. She is a graduate of Brown University.

Her recent work focuses on Natural Awareness, the expansive, effortless form of mindfulness. She also advises organizations in healthcare, education and the workplace on integrating mindfulness. Her books include Wide Awake: A Buddhist Guide for Teens, Glimpses of Being, and, with Susan Smalley, Fully Present. Her guided meditations reach listeners through UCLA Mindful and other apps.

Worth Knowing

Questions

Diana Winston is a mindfulness teacher, author and speaker who directs UCLA Mindful, the mindfulness education center of UCLA Health. She has taught mindfulness since 1993 in hospitals, universities, corporations, nonprofits and schools across the US and Asia, and she has practiced mindfulness meditation since 1989. Much of her standing comes from institutional work: during seventeen years at UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center she helped develop the evidence-based Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPS) curriculum and the Training in Mindfulness Facilitation program, which has trained more than 500 mindfulness teachers worldwide. The Los Angeles Times called her "one of the nation's best-known teachers of mindfulness," and that reputation rests on how widely her training frameworks have spread through clinical and educational settings. What makes her worth following is the bridge she builds between research-based program design and contemplative practice, a combination less common than either alone. Her more recent focus is Natural Awareness, the expansive and effortless form of mindfulness at the center of her book The Little Book of Being. Most of her public output is books, guided meditations and professional training rather than recorded music, so people often encounter her first through a hospital program, a school curriculum or a workplace initiative.
