Meditation Teacher
Burgs is the founder of The Art of Meditation, an organisation offering online meditations, meditation courses and retreats under his guidance. He has been hosting retreats for over 25 years.
His teaching ranges across concentration and mindfulness, vipassana insight practice, healing meditation and Internal Alchemy, the energetic self-cultivation work that draws on chi kung, breathwork and specific meditations. The online courses begin with The Stillness Programme, an introduction to the fundamentals of meditation. They continue through The Art of Meditation and Healing Meditation, and include a programme for anxiety. All are self-paced and use guided meditations alongside reading and audio materials. His retreats run in the UK and in northern Portugal, and some are held mostly in silence.
The Art of Meditation holds that meditation is not a science but a profound journey into the deepest aspects of what it is to be alive. One who masters their own mind, in the organisation's words, moves joyfully through life and makes an "art of just being."
Burgs has written of healing his own brain after a traumatic injury. He found art, calligraphy and other crafts a real help alongside meditation in settling an overactive nervous system, and he has since brought such crafts into his retreat programmes. His teachings are also available through a podcast, an audio library, books, an autobiography and a Patreon community.

Worth Knowing
Burgs is the founder of The Art of Meditation, an organization that has operated for over 25 years, teaching both absolute beginners and experienced meditators through courses, live retreats, and recorded discourses. What sets him apart is a rare pedagogical patience: he doesn't bulldoze newcomers into esoteric territory, but he also doesn't plateau long-time practitioners with beginner instruction. His teaching lineage draws from three substantial teachers across different Buddhist and energy traditions—Pa Auk Sayadaw from Burma, His Holiness Dodrupchen Rinpoche from Tibet (India-based), and Bapak Merta Ada from Bali—which means his curriculum spans vipassana, Dzogchen-influenced approaches, and energy-cultivation practices that most Western meditation teachers don't attempt to integrate. People follow his work because it's neither faddish nor diluted; it treats meditation as a rigorous, years-long journey rather than a wellness hack. His honesty about the non-scientific, philosophical depth of the practice—what he calls the "art of just being"—resonates with seekers tired of commercialized mindfulness packaging.
