“I tell our runners to divide the race into thirds. Run the first part with your head, the middle part with your personality, and the last part with your heart.”

Beschreibung

There is a sword form that asks nothing of you except attention. Way of the Sword is a martial arts retreat at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, NY, where blade work, stillness and breath become a single practice. Led by martial artist and spiritual teacher Damien Echols, it invites you to sharpen awareness, refine discipline and discover what it means to move through the world fully present.

Over three days, traditional martial arts meet contemplative practice. Silence and form, stillness and motion, are woven together as a path toward embodying presence. If you have come to see discipline as punishment, this retreat offers another view: discipline as devotion, and the body as a sacred instrument rather than something to be pushed or ignored.

It is designed for spiritual seekers, self-development practitioners and martial artists alike. You do not need to choose between the meditation cushion and the training floor here. Each informs the other.

What to Expect

The retreat begins on a Friday evening and unfolds through daily practice. Days combine zazen (meditation), discussion and training in a Tang Soo Do sword form, taught as moving meditation. Along the way you will explore:

- Guided movement sessions with the bo staff and open-hand forms
- Teachings on the Chil Sung (Seven Star) philosophy of Korean martial arts, offered as a moral and spiritual compass
- Practical instruction in internal alchemy, presence-based ritual and daily self-discipline
- Methods for turning ordinary life into sacred practice through embodied awareness

The aim is to build strength and resilience while learning to bring full awareness to even the simplest movement, so that ordinary action takes on the quality of ritual. You leave with practices you can carry back into everyday life.

About the Lineup

Damien Echols is a best-selling author, martial artist and spiritual teacher. He guides this retreat, teaching the sword form as a moving meditation that sharpens awareness and opens the doorway to a deeper way of living. Actor Johnny Depp has said of him: "Damien is so kind and loving and open to the possibilities and the world. He's the strongest human being I've ever met."

MC YOGI is a musician born in San Francisco, California, who grew up immersed in a diverse cultural landscape that shaped his artistic path. His early passion for graffiti art became a means of self-expression, and he found a sense of identity in hip-hop culture. Yoga entered his life during his teenage years and gave him a deeper understanding of himself and the world around him, laying the groundwork for his work in music and spirituality.

Venue & Logistics

The retreat takes place at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, NY. Tuition covers workshop costs and time in class with faculty; accommodations are booked separately and include meals and campus amenities for those who stay on-campus, while those commuting can arrange to stay off-campus. Options range from cabin rooms to dorms and tent cabins. For accessible rooms, Omega's registration team can be reached at 877-944-2002.

FAQ

This is a 3-day experiential retreat that combines daily zazen (meditation), discussion, and training in a Tang Soo Do sword form practiced as moving meditation. You also get guided movement sessions with the bo staff and open-hand forms. The emphasis is on blending stillness and motion, silence and form.
Chil Sung, or Seven Star, is presented in the program as a philosophy of Korean martial arts that serves as a moral and spiritual compass. Damien Echols teaches it alongside the physical training, so it is part of the retreat's framework rather than a side topic.
Yes. Omega lists practical instruction in internal alchemy, presence-based ritual, and daily self-discipline. The retreat also teaches methods for turning ordinary life into sacred practice through embodied awareness.
Omega designs it for spiritual seekers, self-development practitioners, and martial artists who want to reclaim the body as a spiritual tool. It treats discipline as devotion rather than punishment. If you are looking for a purely seated or talk-based retreat, note that much of the program is physical training with the sword form, bo staff, and open-hand forms.
