Singer Songwriter · singer-songwriter · ceremonial musician and voice workshop facilitator · New York
Ayla Schafer is a multilingual singer-songwriter and ceremonial musician, described on her site as a "Voice of the Earth". Her music weaves world folk and medicinal song, sung in Spanish, English and Proto-Celtic, and carries themes of memory, remembrance and ancestral wisdom. She lives among the ancient wild lands of Dartmoor and is a mother of two.
A pivotal moment in her musical life came in 2010, when she travelled through South America. The years away from home shaped her writing. She explored the inner landscape and learned from various indigenous traditions about the healing power of song. She has since spent years travelling and studying with indigenous traditions around the world, exploring the voice as a tool for healing, release and self-knowledge.
Ayla began performing at sixteen and gained experience across the UK festival scene. She has collaborated with Brit Award winner Ben Howard and performed as part of the folk-soul duo Susie Ro and Ayla. Folk Radio highlighted the strength and clarity of her songs, and Higher Plains Music called her performances some of the most beautiful world folk it had heard. Chalked Up Reviews observed, "the wisdom of Mother Earth is clearly channelling through Schafer, and just as our mother is, this music is also stunning."
She leads the Music Plants Trees campaign, an initiative to reforest the world through music. Her album Ima Adama (2018) donated 25% of profits to the Pachamama Alliance, and her single Music Plants Trees (2020) donated 100% of profits to tree-planting projects. She travels by train and boat whenever possible.
Alongside her recordings, Ayla shares the voice and its healing power through workshops, retreats, women's circles, one-on-one coaching and ceremonies such as Song of the Soul and Womb Song. She is a qualified Womb Awakening teacher, trained with The Fountain of Life, and also trained in The Voice as a Healing Instrument with The Brothers Koren. She describes her ceremonial work as shaped by her own learning and her relationship with the land, the seasons and spirit. It does not belong to any single tradition.

Worth Knowing
Ayla Schafer is a New York–based vocalist and improviser working at the intersection of North Indian classical music and experimental sound practice. She has distinguished herself through her ability to hold Hindustani vocal tradition—with all its formal rigor and aesthetic sophistication—in genuine conversation with contemporary improvisation, drone, and electroacoustic music, rather than treating them as separate worlds. What draws sustained attention from listeners and students is her refusal to choose between classical mastery and experimental freedom; she brings the microtonal precision and raga-based melodic frameworks of Hindustani music into dialogue with open-form improvisation and sound exploration. Her work has been recognized within experimental music communities and among practitioners engaged with Indian classical traditions, precisely because she models a rare integration: deep formal training that remains intellectually curious rather than reverential. For those encountering her practice, Schafer offers both the accessibility of the human voice and the technical depth of a classical lineage, making her particularly compelling to listeners seeking sacred or devotional sound that doesn't retreat from contemporary artistic inquiry.
