Musician · MC · DJ · music producer · and percussionist · Brooklyn, New York, USA
Sri Kala is a music artist, producer, lyricist and creative freedom guide. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he is a first-generation Caribbean American with roots in Nigeria and Cameroon, and he describes growing up amid the many races and cultures of the city as a formative gift.
As a young person he felt out of place in traditional school and found his community in skateboarding. That passion led him to create the All City Skate Jam, which later evolved into the internationally celebrated Go Skate Day. A period of searching followed, and in 2002 he began exploring meditation, Reiki, Qigong, lucid dreaming and astral travel. His path led to the Hare Krishna movement, where he spent six years as a monk, studying Sanskrit prayers and the healing properties of sound vibration.
Music has been with him since he wrote poetry in elementary school. His sound now blends hip hop, dub reggae, rock, R&B and Afrobeat. As he reconnects with his African heritage, he finds deep similarities between the spiritual traditions of the Yoruba people and the Bhakti and Vedic philosophies he studied, and he describes his music as a way to honor his ancestors and their silenced voices.
His album "Unravel" features vocal tones and sounds that move beyond traditional song structures, drawing on ancient rhythms and his own voice, with an emphasis on vulnerability and organic sound. Alongside his music, he guides people one-on-one and in groups to express themselves creatively and move past limitation, drawing on his years of work with energy, healing, sound vibration and movement. With his wife, Jesse, he has led groups to India to explore Bhakti, and he is a co-founder of Actualize Music, which offers retreats built around turning life stories into anthems. He also hopes to support young people in marginalized communities.

Worth Knowing
Sri Kala is an MC, DJ, music producer, and percussionist working at the intersection of hip hop, reggae, dubstep, and kirtan—a convergence that signals both technical ambition and spiritual intention. What draws listeners and students is not novelty for its own sake, but rather a genuine attempt to merge vernacular electronic music production with the devotional grammar of Indian chant tradition, mediated through live percussion and ambient vocal texturing. Rather than treating these elements as samples or aesthetic borrowing, Sri Kala treats them as languages in conversation; a track might pulse with dubstep's low-end presence while a tamboura or tabla cuts through the mix with unprocessed clarity. This approach appeals to people already skeptical of "spiritual music" marketed as ambient wallpaper, and to hip hop and electronic producers curious about what happens when you take the musicality of Indian classical percussion seriously rather than exoticize it. His weekly gatherings and retreat work suggest he's less interested in chart presence than in fostering communities where creative expression and contemplative practice can coexist.
