“I tell our runners to divide the race into thirds. Run the first part with your head, the middle part with your personality, and the last part with your heart.”

Where This Release Sits

Inspired Minds: Uplifting Hip Hop Mantra Music arrived on September 27, 2024, as a six-track single release. It is a compact statement from an artist whose path has been anything but linear. Sri Kala was born and raised in Brooklyn, a first-generation Caribbean American with roots in Nigeria and Cameroon. He built a community through skateboarding, created the All City Skate Jam (which grew into Go Skate Day), explored meditation and Qigong, and spent six years as a monk in the Hare Krishna movement studying Sanskrit prayers and the healing properties of sound vibration.

This release gathers those threads. The title alone names the project: hip hop and mantra, uplift and mind. For a newcomer, it is a sensible doorway into a body of work that treats devotional chant and contemporary production as equals.

Sonic Character

Sri Kala works as an MC, DJ, producer and percussionist, and the music reflects all four roles. His own descriptions of his sound point to hip hop, dub reggae, rock, R&B and Afrobeat, and the broader picture of his work includes dubstep low end and kirtan's devotional grammar.

Expect rhythm first. The surprise for many listeners is how much groove sits underneath the Sanskrit. Tabla and other Indian percussion tend to converse with programmed beats rather than decorate them, while harmonium provides a warm, slightly metallic anchor beneath the electronics. Production in his work favors space and clarity over saturation, so acoustic drum attacks and sub-bass can be heard as separate things rather than a compressed blur.

His voice leans toward the chanted and ambient rather than the braggadocio of conventional rap. When Sanskrit appears, it carries devotional intention, and the voice behaves like another instrument. Pacing avoids rigid four-on-the-floor patterns; momentum comes from reggae's pocket and Indian rhythmic ideas, sometimes tilting toward the meditative rather than the euphoric. The mood is uplifted but grounded: alive, not sedative.

What to Listen For

I can't responsibly name individual tracks here, since this guide works only from verified facts and no track titles are confirmed. Instead, treat the six tracks as a sequence and listen for three moments in each:

  • The entrance of the percussion. Notice how tabla or live drums arrive and leave the arrangement. This is where Sri Kala's voice as a producer is most audible.
  • The turn between chant and verse. Listen for where the voice moves from rhythmic delivery into sustained, devotional phrasing, and how the beat adjusts to make room.
  • The harmonium underneath. Follow it when the electronics get dense. It is the thread that ties the production back to kirtan.

Pull up the track list on Spotify and note which of the six makes these moments land for you. That is the honest way to find your signature track.

Place in the Tradition

Sri Kala's work belongs to the lineage of kirtan, the call-and-response chant practice rooted in devotional Hindu and Sanskrit traditions, but his approach is contemporary rather than preservationist. His six years as a monk in the Hare Krishna movement give the Sanskrit real grounding, yet he does not claim initiation into a specific guru lineage. The result is an eclecticism built on the idea that devotional practice and creative experimentation reinforce each other.

Within that frame, the release also sits in a hip hop tradition of sampling, looping and layering, applied here to voice and sacred text. His weekly Unravel gatherings in LA (with online access) and the Actualize Music Retreat echo the satsang and ashram traditions, recalibrated for urban and diaspora communities. The album is best understood as one output of that larger practice.

Collaborators elsewhere in his catalog include Anadi, with whom he made Sacred Hip Hop, and Duke Mushroom, who co-produced Srikalogy Kirtan Sessions. Neither is confirmed as part of this release, but they show a pattern of working alongside others.

Who It Lands For

This release lands hardest for listeners who are skeptical of spiritual music that doubles as ambient wallpaper. If you grew up on hip hop and are curious about what chant can do to a beat, or you know kirtan and want to hear what electronic production does to its emotional texture, you are the target.

It suits a life moment of transition or creative restlessness: someone building something, leaving something, or wanting their practice to feel as alive as their playlists. It is a poor fit for those wanting pure ambient calm, strictly acoustic traditional kirtan, or maximal high-BPM electronic energy. Sri Kala's own framing favors creative expression and gathering over clinical wellness claims, so approach it as an invitation to participate, not as a treatment.

How to Listen Closely

Start with headphones, which reveal the separation between acoustic percussion and low-end that the production depends on. Choose a time when you can give it full attention: a morning before the day gets loud, or an evening walk, rather than a work session with the music in the background.

Play all six tracks in order, once, without skipping. On a second pass, follow only the percussion. On a third, follow only the voice. If you practice yoga, mantra or movement, try it as an active soundtrack, where the rhythm keeps you in your body instead of floating off.

If it resonates, the next step is his YouTube channel, which documents live and studio work, and the Unravel gathering, where the music's ideas about creative community become practice.
