Where to Start with Darius Bashar: A Beginner's Guide

Darius Bashar is a Toronto-based meditation teacher, creativity coach, and portrait photographer. He has no albums or books, so this guide points you to the places his work lives: Artist Morning, Insight Timer, and YouTube. I won't name individual sessions, because the best one is whichever you press play on first.

The Single Best Entry Point

Start with the free weekly meditation group at Artist Morning. It is the center of his work, and the other offerings make more sense once you've sat in it. The group is built for creative people, and you meditate alongside others instead of alone with a recording. That changes the experience. You get structure, a live guide, and the sense that other people are also trying to sit still before making something.

If a live group feels like too much commitment, or the time zone doesn't work, use the second-best door: his guided meditations on YouTube, which are made for creators and artists. They give you the same voice and approach with no scheduling.

The Next Places to Go

Insight Timer. Darius has guided hundreds of meditations there, heard by tens of thousands of people. Browse his profile and choose by length and mood. A short one fits a hurried morning, a longer one an evening. This is where you find out which of his styles suits you.

The daily writing accountability group. Once meditation feels familiar, this is the natural next step. It pairs a daily writing practice with other people holding you to it. It suits anyone who has tried journaling and abandoned it by day four.

The wider Artist Morning community. It is a group of creators who support and celebrate each other. Treat it as a place to stay after you've found your footing, not as a starting point.

If you're curious about the photography, his portrait work is a different expression of the same interest in being seen honestly. It's worth a look after you've spent time with the meditations.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect a grounded tone, not incense and mysticism. His teaching blends practical creative tools with spiritual depth, so a session may touch on perfectionism, self-doubt, or the fear of sharing your work, then return to breath and attention. His background helps explain the register. He spent years in Toronto start-ups and advertising, co-chaired TEDxToronto, and went back to film school at nearly thirty. He understands ambition and pressure from the inside, and it shows.

Expect to feel a little exposed in the group setting. That is part of the point.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

"This is only for professional artists." The language is aimed at creatives, but the community is open to anyone who wants to meditate and journal together. If you make spreadsheets, sourdough, or nothing yet, you still qualify.

"Meditation here is a productivity hack." The aim isn't to squeeze out more output. It's to loosen the perfectionism and fear that block your voice, so sharing it feels more truthful and easier.

"I'll do it right once I'm calmer." Beginners often wait to feel settled before sitting. The practice is for the unsettled version of you, and a restless first session counts.

"The writing group wants good writing." The accountability is about showing up daily, not producing polished pages. Judging your output is the habit the work is trying to dissolve.

When This Work Lands Hardest

It tends to land hardest at thresholds: when you're about to share something you made and feel stalled, when you've left a career that defined you, or when you're starting a creative project after years of putting it off. Darius's own path, from start-ups and advertising to film school and photography, wasn't a straight line, and that makes the work especially useful if yours isn't either. It also helps when you're isolated. If you create alone, the shared structure may matter as much as the technique.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Watch one of his guided meditations on YouTube. Afterward, write for five minutes about how it felt, with no editing.

Day 2: Open Insight Timer and try a short meditation of his. Journal for five minutes again.

Day 3: Try a different length or theme on Insight Timer. Note which voice and pacing suit you.

Day 4: Repeat your favorite so far. Familiarity is part of how a practice settles in.

Day 5: Look into the daily writing accountability group and decide whether it fits your schedule.

Day 6: Sit with a longer meditation, then write ten minutes about something you've been avoiding sharing.

Day 7: Attend the free weekly meditation group. By now the voice will be familiar, which makes joining a room of strangers easier. Afterward, review your week of notes and decide what to keep.

By the end of the week you'll know whether his approach fits you, and you'll have seven days of writing to show for it.
