One River by John De Kadt: A Listening Guide

Where It Sits in the Arc

One River arrived on June 1, 2012, as a nine-track album. By then John de Kadt had spent well over a decade as a storyteller, telling myths from indigenous cultures and mystical traditions as ritual rather than performance. He is a musician, poet, and storyteller, and also a kirtan leader. His work is held together by one intention: slowing the world down, even briefly, and returning to the tempo of nature. The album's title suggests that same preoccupation, with a single current running beneath many banks. It is best heard as one chapter of a larger practice that includes his DrumStory performances, his work with The Rememberers, and his creation of the BlessFest sacred arts gathering.

Sonic Character

I can't verify a track-by-track credit list, so I'll stay with what his body of work tells us. De Kadt plays an array of percussive and melodic instruments from across the globe, and his voice sits closer to a storyteller's or devotional leader's than a pop vocalist's. Expect an unhurried pace, with rhythm used as a pulse to settle into rather than a drive forward. Expect a voice that invites you to follow along rather than watch, and a mood that is grounded, contemplative, and communal even when you listen alone.

The nine-track length helps. It is short enough to hear in a single sitting, and the sequence works best as one continuous arc, like a river with its bends, pools, and quickening stretches.

Tracks and Moments Worth Marking

The track titles weren't part of the information I was given, and I won't guess at them. Instead, here are three places in the sequence to listen for, whatever they are called on your copy:

The opening track. Albums rooted in ritual tend to begin by clearing space. Notice how long it takes before the music asks anything of you. If the first minutes feel like arriving and putting your bags down, the album is working as intended.

The middle of the sequence. This is where a storyteller-musician's instincts usually show most clearly. Listen for where the voice turns from song toward invocation or narrative, and where the instrumentation shifts in texture. The stretch between tracks four and six is a good place to pay attention to how the pacing breathes.

The closing track. Devotional records often end by returning you gently to ordinary life rather than finishing with a flourish. Let the last track fully fade before you move. The silence afterward is part of the piece.

Place in the Tradition

One River draws on kirtan and the wider devotional, call-and-response lineage, in which music is a shared practice rather than a product. But de Kadt's roots are broader than any single tradition. His storytelling spans indigenous and mystical sources, and that gives his music a quality closer to ceremony than to genre. It belongs alongside contemporary kirtan, sacred world music, and ritual storytelling, and it overlaps with ambient music in its patience and its willingness to let space do some of the work.

What distinguishes it within that company is the storyteller's sensibility. The question underneath is less "how do I feel?" than "what do I remember?" That echoes the name of his trio, The Rememberers.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This album is for the listener who is tired in a particular way: overscheduled, overstimulated, and hungry for a slower clock. It will suit people who already sit with practice, such as yoga, meditation, or sound baths, and also people who simply want something to release the day. It meets transitions well, including grief, a move, the end of a season of work, or any moment when you sense you need to return to something older and steadier than your to-do list.

It is less suited to someone who wants a hook-driven, high-energy soundtrack. The rewards here accumulate through patience.

How to Listen

Choose an evening, ideally after the day's obligations are done. Use headphones or a quiet room with decent speakers, and dim the lights. Phone away, no multitasking.

Play the album start to finish, in order, without skipping. If you keep a ritual of any kind, such as a candle, a few minutes of breathing, or a journal, treat the first track as the doorway into it. Resist the urge to analyze the first time through. Let it move at its own pace.

On a second listen, follow the rhythm with your breath or hands and notice how the instruments enter and recede. Then, if you can, hear it once more in a group, with friends or in a circle. Music shaped by kirtan and story is meant to be shared, and it opens differently when a room is listening together.

Whatever the setting, the aim is the one de Kadt names in his own work: to slow down, even for a moment, and let the river carry you.
