Where to Start with Giovanni Dienstmann: A Beginner's Guide

Giovanni Dienstmann is a meditation teacher, self-mastery coach, and author. He has practiced daily since March 21st, 2000, with more than 12,000 hours on the cushion. His work is built around practice rather than inspiration. You don't need to know his whole catalog. You need one good entry point and a plan.

The Best Entry Point: Practical Meditation

Start with his book Practical Meditation, popularly called "The Meditation Bible" and translated into seven languages. It is the most complete statement of what he teaches. It reflects the breadth behind his approach: more than 70 techniques tried, more than 300 books studied, ten weeks of monastery training in France, and formal initiation into Zen, Advaita, Raja Yoga, and Mantra traditions. Read it with a goal of sitting, not collecting ideas. Keep it nearby as a reference you return to as your practice develops.

The Next Three Places to Go

LiveAndDare.com. This is the blog he founded, which for years ranked among the five most-visited meditation blogs. Use it to go deeper on a specific problem once the book has given you a foundation, such as restlessness, motivation, or self-doubt. It works better as a lookup tool than a cover-to-cover read.

The Higher Mind Method. This is his awareness-based approach to self-development, drawing on mindfulness, wisdom traditions, personal development, and psychology. After the book, seek out his material on this framework specifically. It is where his meditation teaching connects to daily life, decision-making, and character.

His app. He also shares his teaching through an app. Once you understand the basics from the book, the app is the practical place for guided sessions, which helps if you struggle to sit unaided.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect structure and breadth, not a single doctrine. Dienstmann draws from several traditions and organizes them practically. Expect an emphasis on consistency, since his own credibility rests on decades of daily practice. His stated aim is "empowered peace": a calm that is full of energy, dynamism, and focus. You are not being invited to simply relax. The tone is that of an experienced practitioner and coach, direct and goal-oriented.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

Thinking meditation means emptying your mind. His approach is awareness-based. The skill is noticing and working with what arises, not forcing silence.

Treating peace and ambition as opposites. For him, meditation is about empowerment as well as acceptance. Beginners who expect only softness miss half the point.

Technique-hopping. Having tried 70-plus techniques, he can make the field look like a buffet. That breadth is his research, not your starting assignment. Pick one method and stay with it long enough to learn something.

Assuming he represents one tradition. He is initiated in four, and his method is a synthesis. Judge it by whether the practices work for you.

When This Work Lands Hardest

It tends to land hardest when you are restless, scattered, or stuck in self-doubt, and when you know what you should be doing but struggle with self-discipline. His areas of expertise include self-discipline and self-doubt coaching, so it suits people who want inner steadiness and better follow-through together. It also suits those who have been put off by meditation that seemed passive or vague. His own start came at 15, after a restless adolescence, which may resonate if you are in a turbulent stretch.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1. Read the opening sections of Practical Meditation and choose one technique it presents. Sit for five minutes.

Day 2. Same technique, same time of day, five minutes. Note in one sentence what your mind did.

Day 3. Extend to ten minutes. Read a bit more of the book, focusing on troubleshooting distraction.

Day 4. Sit for ten minutes. Afterward, spend two minutes writing the one habit or thought pattern you most want to change.

Day 5. Use a guided session in his app instead of sitting alone. Compare how it feels.

Day 6. Go to LiveAndDare.com and search for the specific obstacle you noted on Day 4. Read one article and apply it in a ten-minute sit.

Day 7. Sit for ten to fifteen minutes. Then review the week: when did you actually practice, what got in the way, and what was one noticeable effect? Decide on a daily commitment for the following week, even a modest one. Daily repetition is the lesson his own history demonstrates.
