BQ (Boston Qualifier)
A marathon time that meets the qualifying standard for the Boston Marathon — a lifetime goal for many runners.
Understanding BQ (Boston Qualifier)
BQ stands for "Boston Qualifier" — a marathon finish time that meets the qualifying standard for the Boston Marathon, the world's most prestigious road race. Achieving a BQ is a defining milestone for competitive recreational runners, requiring years of dedicated training for most athletes.
Qualifying times are set by age group and gender. For the 18–34 age group, the standard is 3:00:00 for men and 3:30:00 for women. Times get more generous with age (5 minutes per 5-year increment). However, because more runners qualify than slots available, there's an additional unofficial "buffer" — in recent years, runners needed to beat their BQ time by 5–7 minutes to actually gain entry.
The Boston Marathon, organized by the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) since 1897, is the only major marathon that requires a qualifying time for most entries (charity and invitational entries are exceptions). Running Boston is considered the pinnacle of amateur distance running.

Frequently Asked Questions About BQ (Boston Qualifier)
For the average runner, very hard — only 10–15% of marathoners achieve qualifying times. However, with 2–3 years of consistent, structured training, many dedicated runners can reach BQ fitness. The journey to a BQ often involves multiple marathon attempts, learning pacing and fueling lessons along the way.
Because more runners qualify than spots available (~33,000), registration is first-come based on how much faster than the standard you ran. If you're right at the standard, you may not get in. The unofficial buffer changes yearly. Alternatives: charity entries (raise money for a Boston charity partner) or running for an international entry if applicable.
