Burpee Penalty
The standard punishment for failing an obstacle in Spartan Race — 30 burpees before continuing. Love them or hate them, they define OCR.
Understanding Burpee Penalty
The burpee penalty is the defining consequence of obstacle course racing. In Spartan Race — the world's largest OCR series — athletes who fail to complete an obstacle must perform 30 burpees before moving on. It's a simple, brutal rule that separates OCR from every other endurance sport: there's no penalty-free bailout.
The math of burpees adds up fast. A competitive Spartan Beast (13+ miles, 30+ obstacles) might have an athlete fail 3–5 obstacles, meaning 90–150 burpees on top of the running, climbing, and carrying. For age-group racers, the number can be even higher. This is why experienced OCR athletes say "train your weaknesses" — the 2 minutes lost doing burpees per failed obstacle adds up to major time gaps on the results sheet.
Burpee form in competition is strictly enforced at elite levels: chest must touch the ground, full hip extension at the top, and a visible jump with hands above ears. In open heats, enforcement is lighter, but the community generally self-polices. Skipping burpees is considered the ultimate OCR faux pas — worse than walking uphills or taking extra rest at the water station.

Pro Tips: Burpee Penalty
Practice burpees on uneven, muddy terrain — race conditions are nothing like gym floors
Pace your penalty burpees: 3 sets of 10 with 5-second breaths between is faster than rushing and collapsing
Train grip strength and rope climbs obsessively — the rope climb and monkey bars cause the most penalties
In cold races, burpees can actually help by warming you back up after a water obstacle
Frequently Asked Questions About Burpee Penalty
In competitive heats, you'll be disqualified if a referee catches you skipping. In open/recreational heats, there's no formal enforcement, but the OCR community strongly frowns on it. Most participants do their burpees honestly — it's considered part of the sport's integrity.
In open heats, most race directors are understanding about modifications (stepping back instead of jumping, not going fully to the ground). In competitive/age-group heats, strict form is required. If you can't do standard burpees, consider deferring to a later race date rather than risking further injury.
