Origins and Early Life

Roy Masters was born in London, England, in 1928. Before he became known as a counselor and teacher, he trained as a diamond cutter, a trade that rewards patience, steady hands and close attention. The record says little more about his childhood or family background, and it is better to leave those years unwritten than to guess at them. What is documented is a young man with a craftsman's training who, in the 1950s, turned toward a very different kind of study: hypnosis.

The Turning Point

That study shaped everything that followed. Masters worked in hypnosis during the 1950s, but he came to reject hypnotherapy. The way he described the break is distinctive. He said he "unhypnotised" his clients instead of hypnotising them, and he came to regard hypnosis as a "duplication of life's errors."

That phrase matters because it explains the logic of his later teaching. For Masters, the problem was not that people lacked suggestions or techniques. It was that they were already carried along by habitual reactions, and layering a new trance on top only repeated the pattern. His answer was to turn attention back toward the person's own responses, which is the root of the self-observation at the center of his work. He was, in a real sense, a critic of hypnosis from the inside, someone who had practiced it before arguing against it.

Core Contribution

Masters taught a mindfulness-style meditation exercise built around self-observation and the experience of stress. The emphasis is practical rather than ecstatic. His own summary, on his Insight Timer teacher page, reads: "Learn to endure cruelty and injustice without resentment and after the stress has passed you will find the fulfillment you have been seeking."

The instruction is modest and demanding. It does not promise peak experiences or special states. It asks a person to watch their reactions under pressure, decline the pull of resentment, and wait. Stress, in this view, is not an obstacle to the practice but the working material.

The framework around it is explicitly Judeo-Christian. His work is not drawn from a Buddhist, Hindu or yogic lineage, and no guru succession or Sanskrit mantra tradition appears in the record. It is better understood as a Western, pastoral form of counseling that draws on scripture and self-examination, with the earlier years in hypnosis as a clear influence. Readers arriving from secular mindfulness will find the vocabulary more religious and less technique-driven than they might expect.

Major Works and Projects

Radio counseling. In the early 1960s Masters began a talk radio counseling show. It continues today as Advice Line, and the Foundation of Human Understanding describes him as America's first radio counselor. That description is the Foundation's own, but the show's long run is itself a notable fact. Radio suited his method: it was conversational, built around callers' real problems, and rooted in daily life rather than ritual.

The Foundation of Human Understanding. In 1963 he founded the Foundation, a non-profit church organization in Oregon. Its stated aim is to help people perfect their spiritual nature through the principles of Judeo-Christianity, using counseling, books, lectures, radio and the Internet. The Foundation also runs a prison ministry that provides free books, materials and counseling to inmates, and it makes its meditation exercise, known as "Coping Strategies," available to military service members and veterans.

Books. Masters wrote more than 20 books on health, parenting, stress, religion and Christianity. Two titles are named in the record: Your Mind Can Keep You Well and How Your Mind Can Keep You Well. Both reflect his conviction that the mind's habits bear on wellbeing. For a first-time reader, Your Mind Can Keep You Well is a sensible place to begin. The books read as counseling texts rather than spiritual treatises, and the Foundation at fhu.com is the most reliable source for the fuller bibliography.

Brighton Academy. He also founded Brighton Academy, though the record offers no further detail about it.

The Current Chapter

Roy Masters died in Oregon in 2021 at the age of 93. Late in his life he passed the hosting duties to his sons, David and Alan. Alan Masters now hosts Perilous World Radio and leads the Foundation, which continues the counseling, publishing and outreach his father began.

There are no new releases, tours or live events to follow, and it would be misleading to suggest otherwise. His work lives on through the Foundation, its website, the ongoing radio programming and the books. He has no commercial music catalog; the "stress-relief" label attached to his small streaming presence reflects the category of his spoken counseling rather than an album discography.

Cultural Significance

Masters reaches a particular kind of listener. He is not for those who want a secular, technique-only practice, nor for seekers of expansive states or energy work. The scriptural framing may feel unfamiliar to some, and the approach asks for patience over fast relief. His material is also shaped by decades of radio and print rather than modern app design, so it rarely turns up in the playlists that dominate the meditation category.

But that is part of what makes him worth attention. He built a practice of self-observation from a rejection of hypnosis, tied it to a Judeo-Christian moral frame, and carried it through decades of call-in radio. His service-oriented outreach to prisoners, soldiers and veterans gives the work a practical, communal character that is uncommon in the meditation world. The people he reaches are often those living with stress that cannot simply be escaped: people in hard circumstances, family strain or confinement.

The record lists no major-publication coverage or formal awards, and that gap is best read as a limit of the sources rather than a verdict on his standing. What can be said with confidence is that a London-born diamond cutter turned hypnotist turned radio counselor left behind more than 20 books, a Foundation that outlived him, and a plain, durable idea: that fulfillment comes by enduring difficulty without resentment and letting the stress pass.
