“I tell our runners to divide the race into thirds. Run the first part with your head, the middle part with your personality, and the last part with your heart.”

About This Event

Description

You've glimpsed something profound—in ceremony, meditation, grief, or breakthrough—and felt the ground shift beneath you. The vision was real. The opening was undeniable. But now comes the harder part: How do I live this? This five-day winter solstice workshop at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA is designed for those ready to do the slow, sacred work of integration—the descent that transforms peak experience into embodied wisdom.

Rather than chasing the next peak, we gather December 7–11, 2026 to explore what depth psychology calls the return journey. Drawing on Jungian frameworks, the ancient pattern of katabasis (symbolic descent), and contemplative practice, this healing workshop honors the unglamorous but essential process of metabolizing vision into daily life. We examine how spiritual inflation and spiritual bypass arise when experience outpaces integration, and how shadow work, dreamwork, and humble discipline protect the fruits of inner work.

If you've felt the call to live in service to what you've seen—to transform insight into embodied action and accountability—this retreat offers a container and practices to anchor that intention into your life.

What to Expect

Over five days, you'll move through structured inquiry and somatic practice designed to deepen integration. The workshop weaves together Jungian depth psychology, symbolic amplification, and contemplative practice to help you metabolize profound experience. Each day includes journaling, dreamwork, somatic inquiry, ritual, and sacred conversation—spaces to examine archetypes, shadow material, and the values that depth work produces: love, accountability, and relational responsibility.

The arc moves from exploring the terrain of your inner experience, through examining patterns of inflation and bypass, into concrete practices for anchoring insight into daily life. By the final days, you'll be working directly with how to carry this integration forward—how to live differently because of what you've seen. Expect a blend of psychological insight, contemplative silence, and embodied practice in the nourishing, transformative setting of Esalen's Big Sur coastal sanctuary.

Venue & Logistics

Held at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, this five-day residential workshop runs Monday, December 7 through Friday, December 11, 2026. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, grounding clothing suitable for both contemplative work and somatic practice. The winter solstice timing anchors the work in the season of descent and renewal. Accommodation and meals are available at Esalen; check the venue website for accessibility information and to arrange any specific needs.
