Creative Workshop

About This Event

Description

This creative workshop at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, is a weekend deep dive into your own creative process, led by The Brothers Koren. It is for anyone who feels blocked, stuck or disconnected from their creativity, whether the work is songwriting, painting, voice, entrepreneurship or simply the way they move through a day. No creative experience is necessary, and every creative modality is welcome.

Isaac and Thorald Koren work with embodied voice practice and a trauma-aware, voice-positive approach. Over the weekend you explore your distinct creative personality and look for harmony and coherence in how you start, develop and finish what you make.

What to Expect

The weekend rests on the brothers' belief that almost everything we do involves creative energy, from writing a song to choosing what to wear or having a conversation. Many people feel shut down at some stage of making, whether they struggle to begin or to finish. The workshop asks what becomes possible when that process is back in flow, and offers a way to reframe what being creative means.

The brothers create a safe space to move past inhibition and toward your authentic expressive impulse. They draw on embodied voice techniques, creative process design flow and collaborative games. These are meant to help you meet your own brilliance with some play. Bring your voice, your ideas and your curiosity.

The schedule begins on Friday. Check-in is after 2:00 pm, with room keys available at 4:00 pm. A "How to Drop into Esalen" orientation runs from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, and the opening session with The Brothers Koren runs from 7:15 to 9:30 pm. On Saturday there are workshop sessions from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 4:15 to 6:15 pm, with lunch and open campus time between them, and an evening program with the brothers from 7:30 to 10:00 pm. Sunday has a final workshop session from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm for integration and closing. Lunch is available until 2:00 pm, and guests depart by 10:00 am or after the final session.

About The Brothers Koren

Isaac and Thorald Koren are transformational artists and facilitators who help people reclaim creativity, emotional freedom and embodied expression through trauma-aware, voice-positive practices. They created The Songwriter's Journey and founded the Your Big Voice Foundation.

The Setting

Esalen Institute sits on the Big Sur coast and is known for its hot springs, gardens and open-minded approach to exploration. Guests can use the hot springs and other campus features during their stay, and open classes on the campus schedule are available to registered guests on a first-come basis.

Accommodation ranges from shared sleeping bag space and bunk beds to standard shared and private rooms, premium rooms with ocean or forest views, wooden yurts, and several historic suites. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served, along with coffee, tea and snacks. Registration options include workshop with a stay on-site, workshop with a stay off-site, and an individual day pass.

Getting to Esalen involves Highway 1. Caltrans has run twice-daily convoys on the highway, at 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, as the only way into and out of northern Big Sur, so it is worth checking current travel conditions and planning your arrival around them.

Before You Go

Workshop instruction, housing, all meals, coffee, tea and snacks, hot springs access and the open class schedule are included. Healing Arts sessions such as Esalen massage and holistic services, specialty coffee, tea or alcohol from the bar, and bookstore purchases are extra. Guests in the sleeping bag space bring their own sleeping bag and bedding. A scholarship application is available for those who need it.

Common Questions

FAQs

The Brothers Koren are the facilitators of this weekend deep dive into your personal creative process. They specialize in creating a safe space where you can move past inhibitions and align with your authentic expressive impulse, by identifying and supporting your distinct voice and creative code.
The organizer lists three main tools: embodied voice techniques, creative process design flow, and collaborative games. The aim is to help you discover your creative personality and find harmony and coherence in your own process, while playfully encountering your own brilliance.
No. The listing states no creative experience is necessary, and all creative modalities are welcome, including art, music, voice and entrepreneurship. The brothers treat everyday acts like choosing what to wear or having a conversation as creative, so the workshop is framed broadly.
Yes, it speaks directly to that. The description addresses people who feel disconnected, stuck or disempowered, whether they have trouble starting or finishing ideas. If you want a technical class in one specific craft, this is not that kind of program, as the focus is on your process and voice.
