Sprint Triathlon
Beginner-friendly triathlon: 750m swim, 20K bike, 5K run. Perfect first multi-sport race.
Understanding Sprint Triathlon
A sprint triathlon is the shortest standard triathlon distance: 750m swim, 20K (12.4-mile) bike, and 5K (3.1-mile) run. It's designed to be the entry point into multi-sport racing, typically taking 1–2 hours to complete.
The sprint distance is short enough that fitness requirements are modest — if you can swim 750 meters without stopping, ride a bike for 30–40 minutes, and run a 5K, you can finish a sprint tri. The real challenge for first-timers is the transitions: getting out of the water and onto the bike (T1), then off the bike and into running shoes (T2).
Sprint triathlons are everywhere — most cities have multiple options from April through October. They're the perfect way to test whether you enjoy multi-sport racing before committing to the longer training demands of Olympic or Ironman distance.

Pro Tips: Sprint Triathlon
Practice transitions at home: getting out of a swimsuit and onto a bike quickly saves real minutes
Lay out your transition area the night before — know exactly where everything goes
Use body glide to prevent wetsuit/clothing chafing during the swim-to-bike switch
Don't skip "brick" workouts (bike then run) — your legs will feel strange running off the bike the first time
Frequently Asked Questions About Sprint Triathlon
No. Any bike that fits you and is in working order will do for a sprint triathlon. Many first-timers race on hybrid or mountain bikes. A road bike will be faster, but equipment is far less important than fitness at the sprint distance.
Most sprint triathlons allow any stroke — you don't have to do freestyle. Backstroke, breaststroke, or even sidestroke will get you through 750 meters. Many beginners complete the swim in 15–25 minutes. Practice swimming in open water at least twice before race day to get comfortable.
